Foundation Stone Laid for Miinisadam Piers
On 2 July, a foundation stone was laid for the reconstruction of the piers at Miinisadam. Once completed this autumn, the project will enhance the port’s capacity to accommodate vessels of both the Estonian Navy and NATO Allied nations.
“The laying of the foundation stone marks an important milestone in the modernisation of Miinisadam’s infrastructure. Upon completion, the project will provide the port with modern and reliable infrastructure, improve conditions for servicing vessels, and strengthen the port’s ability to support the operations of both the Estonian Navy and NATO Allied forces,” said Ando Voogma, Head of the North-East Infrastructure Portfolio at the Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (ECDI).
Birgit Tohus-Leppik, Head of Port Construction at BauEst OÜ, noted that the reconstruction of marine structures and dredging works require thorough preparation, as well as professional design and construction. “Our goal is to combine quality and safety to ensure the long-term reliability of the completed port facilities. We thank the Estonian Centre for Defence Investments for the opportunity to contribute to this important project and extend our gratitude to all our cooperation partners.”
The construction works include the reconstruction of the existing pier and breakwaters, with one of the breakwaters being converted into an additional pier. The harbour basin will also be dredged, and four new floating pontoons for small craft will be installed. The total length of the new quay line will be 326 metres.
As a result of the project, the port’s capacity to receive vessels from both Estonia and NATO Allied nations will be significantly increased. The new berths will also improve the port’s day-to-day operational capabilities, while the reconstructed breakwaters will provide more effective protection for the harbour basin during adverse weather conditions.
The project is scheduled for completion in September 2026. The total cost of the project is €13.5 million, financed through the NATO Security Investment Programme (NSIP).
